A door is just a term for an opening in a wall or a moving plate or panel. Elsinore has many original doors and gates, which add personality to the houses and the town in general. The wealth of detail in these important old building elements is based on tradition and centuries-old craftsmanship – typically with high-quality joinery and many unique features and details. There are many different examples of single and double-leaf doors reflecting different styles ranging from the 18th century up to the beginning of the 20th century.
GATES
Originally, a gate was a practical entrance for craftsmen and small businesses into the town’s courtyards. Today, the same gates lead into the many beautiful courtyards in Elsinore that are home to some of the town’s green oases and communal areas.
HISTORICAL DOOR PROFILES
The drawing illustrates various characteristic doors, some of which can be found in Elsinore. On the left, there are examples of external doors and, on the right, there are two rows of internal doors, which were either used for grander or more ordinary rooms. The corresponding period profiles with their frames and panels are in the middle.
HATCHES
There are numerous hatches around town that provide access to cellars. When a cellar entrance faces the street, the hatch is often built into the facade and extends out onto the pavement.
GATES WITH BUILT-IN DOORS
Some gates have built-in doors, so you do not have to open the entire gate to get in and out.
RENOVATION
Wooden gates that have been attacked by rot and fungus can be repaired with new wood. Old ornate brackets and hinges that often adorn historical gates can be freshened up and refurbished so they look like new, as with this cellar door from 1736.
